MR GOLDEN BONANZA is now
owned by Cindy Thorn.
Mr Golden Bonanza is a palomino overo stallion who was born on March 12th 1987.  He is registered with
both the
American Paint Horse Association (Registration # 137,903)
and the
Pinto Horse Association of America. (Registration #68431)

Here at Rainbow Gate Farm he is affectionately known as "Nana".  Stud Fee 2006 $300.

Nana is an own son of the Reserve World Champion Mr Fancy Bonanza (76,801) and a daughter of
Vaughn's Gold (47293).  Through his sires side and a horse by the name of "Golden Luck" he even traces
back to the famous MAN O WAR.

But we feel Nana has the most wonderful gift any horse can pass along to his offspring - a wonderful calm
and quiet disposition.  He throws a big hip and color to his babies too but over and over again we hear of
these wonderful horses that carry his name on their papers.

Nana is almost 19 years old.  He is a gentleman to his mares and a doll to handle.  I'm sure he has quite a
few interesting stories he could tell of his life if he could speak but we know only a few of them.  After his
breeders who sold him as a yearling we are his fifth owners.

The Barn Collapses and he survives!
In 1998 just after he was purchased by Deb and Steve Vought and before they could pick him up, a huge
storm blew the barn he was stabled in over right on top of him, and other horses.  Not only was the barn
on top of him but 2500 square bales of hay.   Nana survived, buried under the rubble of the barn although
sadly two other mares and fillies had to be put down.  When he was finally reached a huge beam lay
across his back and it was feared he had broken his back.  The rescuers tried to move the beam to no
avail and finally walked away to find more tools and assistance.  When they returned Nana had shimmied
himself out from underneath the beam and was limping away!  He was found to have a bone chip below
the hock of his right rear leg which was operated on and removed.  The only other sign of his close brush
with death is that occasionally he will limp on his front right leg.
This fabulous stallion went on to continue siring wonderful babies.  I heard recently from a lady in Texas
who owns one of his palomino overo sons and loves him to bits!  She is sending photos which will be
posted here on his page when they arrive.

One Good Turn deserves another.....
We first heard of Nana when in 1995 I took a mare to him to be bred.  Sadly the mare didn't settle and I
found out later that she had been sold as un-breedable by a previous owner.  Then in 2002 we went to
see a palomino yearling filly who was advertised for sale.  I took special note of her seeing that Nana was
her sire.  That was when we met our now good friends Deb and Steve Vought who were the owners of
Nana.  We bought "Emma" and had the pleasure of breaking her in!  She now lives in Texas.
Deb and Steve told us at the time they were retiring from the horse breeding business and Nana was up
for sale.  We didn't have the funds or I would have bought him on the spot!

We did take another mare up to breed to Nana however which Deb and Steve kindly offered to breed for
free in consideration of the fact I had never gotten a foal from the 1995 attempt!  Nana had belonged to
someone else then! While that mare was there we received a call from Deb.  Nana had suffered a
mysterious accident in his own pasture and needed to be rushed to the vet hospital.  His eye was
ruptured and they could not save it.  We picked up our mare and wished Deb and Steve the best with
poor Nana!

Nana's luckiest escape yet!
The next spring Emma became ill and I was in touch with Deb and Steve frequently through the course of
her mystery illness!  We never did discover what was wrong with her. She acted like she had foundered -
stiff and barely able to walk.  We treated her for six months and she finally made a full recovery.  One
night I e-mailed Deb to tell her how Emma was doing and she mentioned that they were having Nana
gelded the next day.  They did not feel it was right to sell him after all he had been through.  I e-mailed
back to say I would have given him a home as a stallion in a heartbeat if I could have afforded him but
that I felt they had made the right decision.  We then went out for the evening.  When we returned there
was an e-mail from Deb saying "If you were serious call tonight. In the morning will be too late.  We think
you can afford him."
So at around ten or eleven that night, just twelve hours before the 9am vet appointment, Nana's lucky
streak came through again!  We were over the moon to hear that he was being given to us under two
very reasonable conditions. He was to always run with mares, and he was not to be sold or given away
without their approval of his future home.
So on November 24th 2002 Nana became ours!

Miracle Babies!
Since his close call and escape from becoming a gelding Nana has gone on to sire more babies.  We
sometimes call these the
"miracle babies".  He had two registered paint babies born in 2004 "Rei Scooting
Bonanza" and "Golden Eagle Feather" to outside mares and he also sired another paint filly and several
pinto/ half Arabian fillies that year.
We are expecting several babies to our own mares this coming 2006 season.
Eighty two registered APHA babies and counting!  Out of 82 he has 31 palomino, eleven buckskin, one
cremello, 2 dun and 12 red dun babies!  He has also sired 4 bays, 19 sorrels/chestnuts and one red roan

Nana is homozygous for the bay gene.  We can tell you he will not sire a black, blue roan or grullo foal as
he will always throw his "A" or "bay" gene resticting black to the points on any black based horse.
But he throws plenty of pretty palominos and buckskins!

Dun Gene; Nana does carry one copy of the dun gene. He will sire duns and red duns, dunalinos and
dunskins!

NO LETHAL WHITE GENE!  Nana was tested for and DOES NOT carry the gene for Overo Lethal White
Syndrome.
He will never sire a lethal white foal even if bred to carriers as the foal must inherit a copy from both
parents.
So many people send me photos
and testimonials of his offspring
that I have created a new page just
for his offspring which we have
called

"Nana's Babies".
